Ecovillage Design
Rural tourism model
The ecovillage will apply for a rural camping licence on the property that will allow for multiple small homes to be built. There are some minimum requirements for this licence, such as a reception, some electricity and water supply, fire safety and access.
Private homes and gardens
Resident guardians have their own home plots of land in the ecovillage where they can build an off grid home within certain size and natural method constraints. Natural methods will aim to have low impact on the land and low embodied energy and pollution, in balance with longevity, time to build, comfort.
Examples are straw bale roundhouses with roundwood frames from local timber, plastered with local clay.
Ownership of the plots will remain with the cooperative, but a long-term lease will give the residents the right to live and develop their plot, with details about how their investment into the plot would be reimbursed if they leave the project or move plots (see Finance and Economics page)
Communal area
An area separate from the home plots, with communal buildings and facilities, also off grid, with natural methods and principles.
For example:
-
Events space
-
Events kitchen
-
Guest accommodation
-
Compost toilets
-
Showers for events (heated by combination of solar, wood fire and biogas.)
-
Therapy space
-
Communal gardens
-
Office space
-
Workshop spaces and ateliers (woodwork, crafts etc)
Off grid living and technology
-
Electricity production from solar, wind, hydro.
-
Non-toxic, alternative power storage methods eg, iron oxide or salt chemical batteries, gravity ‘battery’,
-
Solar cooking and hot water
-
Biogas systems
-
Efficient wood burners designs eg rocket stove and heat mass storage
-
Low energy, direct power clothes washing machines.
-
Passive food cool storage eg: stone cellar
-
Food preserving, brewing, fermenting.
